AOL has been pretty secret about a new app they are about to release but I found some things, how they have been hiding etc but I figured I would share at least that they are getting ready to launch an app called Starlike.
AOL secured the domain name Starlike.com via the drop on or about 7/16/2014. It appears the domain was captured at NameJet and a likely 3 day auction took place. By 7/21/2014 the name “Andres Lorca” was displayed in whois with an AOL email address.
On 7/22/2014, the day after AOL acquired the .com according to whois, they filed a trademark for STARLIKE which states:
“Downloadable software in the nature of a mobile application for receiving, organizing, and viewing social media content from across multiple websites and social media networks; downloadable software in the nature of a mobile application for social bookmarking that enables users to organize, store, manage, share, and search for bookmarks of resources online”
So, it appears the new Starlike app from AOL is going to be a social bookmark type app.
AOL also registered the domain name StarlikeApp.com on 6/3/2014 via GoDaddy, under privacy protection. The domain was later transferred to CSC Corporate Domains, which AOL uses to manage and acquire domain names. According to whois records, the domain likely transferred into CSC about 8/11/2014 to 8/13/2014. (clearly this is one way CSC is hiding registrations and I will be doing another article soon on many of the tactics large buy services are doing)
