Domain Movers: Ruckus.com, Drips.com & More

Another round  of DotWeekly Discoveries awaits you! These are domain names that are moving as a result of a domain name sale, company purchase, domain registration etc by large corporations and more. These would likely go unreported otherwise and it’s often the first time publicly that the following has been announced.

It’s A Domain Fact! Microsoft Corporation owns over 92,000 domain names as of today.

Digital Virgo has made a pretty big play on the term Digital Global Pass and registered many variations of domain names with it. DigitalGlobalPass.com as well as the .net, .org and .info. They also registered the double hyphenated version in the same TLD’s and the single hyphen version in the same TLD’s…Digital-Global-Pass.com and Digital-GlobalPass.com etc.

Brunswick Corporation registered the domain names FromTheStandingDesk.com / .net

VirginSport.com has been purchased by a currently unknown CSC Corporation Services company but I would have to think this is Virgin Enterprises Limited who is also a CSC client. The domain was listed for sale for $1,295 on HugeDomains.com and was likely the sales price.

Ruckus.com has been acquired by a currently unknown CSC client. The domain was long owned by Ruckus Network from Boston, MA, then Herndon, Virginia and registered with GoDaddy.

On 6/26/2009, DNS changed from MyDnyDns.com to GoDaddy’s SECURESERVER.NET and on 3/24/2010 the domain switched to GoDaddy Cash Parking. On 5/5/2010 the registrant data changed to a Fr. Harry out of Beaverton, Oregon. The domain didn’t expire, as the expire date was 12/1/2011 at that point. The domain has remained that way since. On 2/17/2015 registrant email address changed from [email protected] to [email protected] with all other whois data remaining the same. 2/19/2015 Ruckus.com transferred out of GoDaddy to CSC.

I really dislike seeing “slight” whois changes like the registrant email address change mentioned above, then a transfer out. This can often indicate a stolen domain (not likely in this case with it transferring to CSC). If anything, the [email protected] email address could be tied to a secret domain buyer for CSC.

According to Wikipedia.org,  Ruckus Network was a free online music service. The service was founded in 2003 by Vincent Han and David Galper. It raised $41.5M from Battery Ventures, Shelter Capital, and others; was acquired in 2008 by Total Music, a joint venture between Sony and Universal; and was closed on February 6, 2009 when Ruckus’ website was replaced with a graphic saying, “Unfortunately the Ruckus service will no longer be provided. Thanks.”

There is potential that Sony/Universal could still own the domain and there wasn’t a “sale” but it is hard to tell with just the whois information provided or who this “Fr. Harry” is or how they even became the owner of the domain name.

DowntownColumbia.com has been acquired by The Howard Hughes Corporation. The domain was long owned (since 2007) by a Kevin Fields of Columbia, SC. A 7/2/2012 whois record shows the domain had an expire date of 9/16/2012 and another whois history record on 9/14/2012 (2 days prior to expiring) the domain name is renewed until 9/16/2014 but whois changes to privacy. The domain name remained that way until and past the 9/16/2014 expire date and expired. The domain name was removed from the registry and grabbed on the drop by pheenix.com on 12/6/2014. The backorder’er or winner of the auction for the domain was SK Creations, Inc.as displayed in whois on 12/8/2014. A 2/7/2015 whois record indicates that a sale has taken place at domain name aftermarket service Sedo, as the domain goes into transfer service. 2/19/2015 Howard Huges Corp is revealed in whois as the buyers. 2/20/2015 DotWeekly.com reports the story.

The question remains… the 9/14/2012 change to privacy. Was Kevin behind it? Did the domain sell at that point? The domain basically went untouched from that point on and expired after it was renewed for two years prior. I was unable to find the purchase price at Pheenix or Sedo.

MsWifi.com has been acquired by a currently unknown CSC CORPORATE DOMAINS, INC. client with the help of “The Negotiator Agency, Inc.” which is a secret buyer of CSC. The domain was registered in 2005 and has spent most of its life changing domain name parking providers and finally selling at Sedo for $6K.

WWD.com has changed ownership according to whois records from Conde Nast Publications Inc./AdvancedMags.com of New York to PMC of Los Angeles. Penske Media Corporation released the following on 2/18/2015 and was the likely reason for the whois change.

Disney Enterprises, Inc. registered 17 new domain names with several of them including the single letter D before a word.. like DVerve.com, DMagicBackstage.com, DTeamExperience.com, DApplause.com, DFamilyHoliday.com, DInsiderMagic.com D U M B! They also registered normal domains like DisneyApplause.com, DisneyEmployeeMagic.com, CastActivites.com, DisneyRecognition.com, DisneyUp.com, DisneyVerve.com, DisneyMagicBackstage.com, DisneyFamilyHoliday.com and DisneyLandParisHalfMarathon.com .

Microsoft registered 75 “demo” domain names like EMSDemo100.com for an example. They all contained EMSDemo+Number.com Enterprise Mobility Suite is the comprehensive cloud solution of IT, BYOD, and SaaS challenges according to Microsoft.

PuppyHood.com has been acquired with the help of Comlaude for Nestle / Purina. The domain was parked with DomainNameSales.com prior. They also assisted with HelloPuppyHood.com, MyPuppyHood.com and ThisIsPuppyHood.com. The only thing I could find currently is Purina Dog Chow and a page talking about Puppy Hood, https://dogchow.com/puppyhood so Nestle likely is going to make a bigger play on the term. I was unable to find a sales price.

MarketTrends.com has changed whois ownership from Informa Research Services, Inc. to Sandhills Publishing and the domain transferred from SafeNames to Network Solutions. Informa has owned the domain since 2005. Sandhills Publishing Company is a privately held American magazine publishing company. It publishes trade and consumer publications for the computer, trucking, agriculture, aircraft, and heavy machinery industries.

Drips.com has been sold at Sedo.com to a currently unknown buyer. The domain has been registered since May 1996 and owned by Breck Media and has been parked with Sedo for several years. This domain just sold, so Sedo may report a sales price on this domain in the near future.
