TechCrunch just published a story that Microsoft will name its new browser to replace Internet Explorer, currently code named Project Spartan… “Edge” well, really, Microsoft Edge or Edge Browser as many will call it.
Most will simply call it “Edge”
I really thought Microsoft would secure the matching domain name to its new browser but they didn’t! Edge.com is owned by Edge Systems LLC according to whois records. The domain name has been registered since March 23, 1989.
The domain problems don’t stop there for Microsoft… A “shilei” registered the domain name MicrosoftEdge.com on 1/26/2015 according to whois records….
Microsoft is currently using the domain name MeetProjectSpartan.com to show off its browser.
MicrosoftEdge.net was registered by somebody other than Microsoft on March 17, 2015, as was the .org / .info / .biz.
They are also using the tagline: A Browser Built For Doing
In general, Microsoft is really good at securing domain names to match its products and services, so I’m not sure why they didn’t this time around. Microsoft owns over 92,000 domains according to DomainTools, yes 92,000….
The one I would have likely picked? START
When you want to go on the web.. you have to START with the browser, plus they own Start.com already!
Microsoft actually just secured today the similar domain MeetEdge.com
check whois… had i known about them naming their Browser Edge one day earlier, i would have registered exactly that domain before them.. sigh, another opportunity out of the window..
Thanks for sharing the domain Daniel.
I can imagine a lawsuit from Samsung already being prepared. I agree with you that Start would’ve been far better
