New Domain Registrations By Large Corps

In today’s DotWeekly Discoveries, I only included newly registered domain names. I sometimes save these up for slow days, like today when not a lot of transfers are taking place because it’s a weekend. So here are some recently registered domain names by some large companies and some info related to the registration if I could find it.

Dropbox

Hand registered the domain name DropboxNameGame.com . I tried visiting the domain name, in which it told me that it was mobile only. So I tried on my phone and it “kind of worked” by allowing me to add the app, sign in but then there was a json error and didn’t let me go any further.

So they are putting the domain to use right away and the application is likely related to “matching names to headshots (pictures)” of some sort? I was hoping it was a domain name game but I guess we will have to wait a little longer to actually try the game! I found some code here, which gave me light into the “put a name with the face”.

Home Box Office, Inc.

Registered the domain name FooFightersSonicHighways.com

HBO is launching a documentary in October 2014 on the Foo Fighters and it’s called Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways. The domain name SonicHighways.com was also registered on 5/21/2014 at GoDaddy (until 2019) and is under privacy protection. It is hard to say who registered that domain.

CBS Studios Inc.

Registered the domain name Yammoo.com (YamMoo) . I couldn’t find much as to what this may relate to at this point.

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

Wins the funny domain registration of the month…. with the domain name they registered ThisPlaceSmellsLikeBalls.com

CBS Radio Inc.

Registered the domain name KirkAndKage.com for a likely upcoming radio show? They also appear to have secured the Twitter account https://twitter.com/KirkandKage also and they started
following 98.7 the fan and CBS Tampa Bay. So I would say this is related in some way to 98.7 The Fan in some way.

Merck Sharp and Dohme Corp (Merck.com)

Registered the domain name WhySoAwake.com

Penguin Random House Limited (Randomhouse.com)

Registered the domain name ForgettingToBeAfraid.com . “State Sen. Wendy Davis, the Texas Democratic candidate for governor, has titled her upcoming memoir Forgetting to Be Afraid”. This
was the reason behind the registration. It was announced publicly on May 27, 2014. Better late than never to register the matching domain!

Alliance Trading Inc. (PoolCorp)

Hand registered the domain name AmericasLandscapers.com . Great ring to this domain and will be nicely fitting with an ad campaign! America’s Landscapers!
Poolcorp owns and launched the website SwimmingPool.com in Nov of 2004. The company has a ton of subsidiaries and Alliance Trading Inc is one.`

Disney Enterprises, Inc.

Registered the domain name FrozenKaraokeParty.com . Disney Frozen was a HUGE hit movie and Disney also offers the “Disney Karaoke Series” so it’s only fitting to have the Frozen version.
Amazon sells it for about $8. Kids are going nuts of the Frozen Karaoke Series cd is now available. Disney has one heck of a system when releasing movies, with the
products / toys / apps etc that closely follow! Demi Lovato performed the super popular “Let It Go” in the movie Frozen. The Demi Lovato Youtube video has been viewed only 205 MILLION
times since it’s November 2013 posting. Add that with the video posted by Disney of the part from the movie and those 284 MILLION views and the UK version sing along with 130 MILLION views
and that’s a lot of views just on YouTube. Like I said, it’s popular!

DotWeekly News

This will be my last article until I’m able to figure some stuff out. I really, really wanted to come back domaining and blogging full time and basically used the past 1.5 months living and learning, trying different things and so on. It’s not working financially for me. This site is a full time job but the reality is, I worked 84 hours the past 7 days on DotWeekly. That is 12 hours a day and sometimes MORE that I didn’t even add in…

The past 7 days, my income was $15.93 or about $0.19 per hour...

I have a 3 year old to care for. He needs food. I need food. My wife needs food. My two dogs need food. Bills, oh yeah those, well…

I can not provide for my family, making $0.19 an hour.

I know this isn’t “your fault”, it’s mine! I have always been open book with my readers, and that will never change and also the reason I am filling you in with this now.

This doesn’t mean DotWeekly is going away, I just don’t know what to do right now. I am spending a lot of time each week in writing, researching, digging etc. and I just can not do it for $0.19 an hour. I can’t and I’m sure you couldn’t either. Again, not your fault, I’m just struggling to earn $ on DotWeekly. Not making money = me not being able to keep blogging the way I have been the past several weeks.

Just an FYI and I hope to keep you updated.

  1. Yes, it can be tough to make money blogging as Google Adsense just doesn’t pay much and it can take a while to attract sponsors. I’ve noticed a decline in the number of domain bloggers compared to several years ago. One suggestion would be to accept paid posts which mention specific domain auctions which domainers are trying to promote. You could still reject the submission if you don’t like the domain or think the domain reserve is grossly overpriced. But for reasonably-priced quality domain auctions a paid promotion might generate some extra cash.

  2. Jamie, Sorry to hear about your current situation. You are a wonderful domain writer and I’m pretty sure other blog owners will be happy to hire you. You can do it until you figure out what you should do. With your skill set and history in domain investing I know you are going to figure out what you should do. Please let me know if I can help in anyway.

BTW, in your post you said “Dropbox (Box.com)”. Actually Box.com is one of Dropbox competitors.

I wish you all the best and I believe you are going to pass through this.

  3. Jamie,

as a parent you understand responsibility and as an adult you understand life is tough. No surprises and no complaining. We offer an affiliate program. If you have an audience this may be a good option for you. Think solutions not obstacles.

Creativity and action buddy. Anything worth having is worth working for.

  4. You can’t live on adsense nor rely on advertisers alone. You should offer domain related services you can provide. You write pretty good so you can definitely make a page and market your content building service for people wanting to develop their own niches sites,… It doesn’t cost you anything to put a banner on your blog offering it.

Your blog in my opinion adds trust to the services you provide.

  5. Jamie,
I have so much respect for you and I still remember when you had a newborn. What can I advice you is two things.

    1. You need to contact the advertisers yourself, such as Escrow.com, above.com, domainholdings etc

    2. You should make more connections within the domaining community with people who are more successful and know they are doing. Otherwise, keep writing will not get you anywhere. You need to make some sales calls for your advertising. You can also talk to adam dicker or michael berkens, so you can blog on their sites and get paid for putting together content on their blogs.

You need to get out of your comfort zone and hustle, simply writing content won’t get you anywhere.

God bless you and your family.

      1. Thank you for all the suggestions! I will consider them all and am working hard to be able to continue blogging, as it’s something I love doing!

  6. Another idea is domain brokerage – there is no shortage of domainers wanting to sell domains. Like other brokers you would have to find a way to arrange deals where you broker domains worth spending your time on. If you don’t want the hassle of dealing with thousands of low-quality submissions, you could reach out to an existing domain broker who needs help.

  7. You do good work Jamie.
It’s a small industry in comparison to many others out there.
Keep writing even if it’s only once a week and email/call the companies tools that you use to create the articles like DomainTools, etc as well as some of the other companies that many in the industry use to complete a transaction (auction houses, escrow, etc) to advertise.
Even if it only gets you a small $$$ amount in each month making you cash flow positive it’s a good start.
