Domain Movers: YDN.com, Riolu.com + More

Large corporations register and acquire a lot of domain names every day. It is interesting to have a pulse on this activity, so DotWeekly keeps a close eye on it and shares the data with you. Here is some of the activity from the past 24 hours.

Mylan Inc. registers the domain names MyCustomCare.net and .org but currently do not own the .com, but it’s for sale for $3,450. Will they buy it? Only time will tell.

Verizon registers the domain name WinningAsOne.net and doesn’t currently own the .com, which is for sale for $1,495. Will they buy it?

Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. registers the domain name FullThread.net and doesn’t currently own the .com, which is for sale for $1,495 and owned by HugeDomains.

The above 3 mentioned actually happens a lot. Companies will register other TLD’s with the .com being for sale or owned already by somebody. Sometimes they later buy the .com, other times they do not. In the cases where they do not buy the .com, then I rarely see the reason for the other TLD registrations. It’s often a head shaker for me as to why they register the other TLD’s if they do not buy the .com. This often results in the companies never even using the registered domains.

Facebook Inc. registers the domain names FBShuttle.com .net and .org adding to its domain name portfolio of over 3,100 domain names.

Anheuser-Busch, LLC registered the domain name MusicYouCanTaste.com adding to its 1,800+ other owned domain names.

Disney Enterprises, Inc. registered the domain name GoodNewsIsComing.com adding to its nearly 20,000 other domain names.

GoDaddy/NameFind sold several good domain names in one day (about 18 total) and some of the headliners were KPW.com, Nourished.com, Sapling.com, Threefold.com and YDN.com

Nintendo has really only been allowing domain names to expire out of its portfolio and has not registered any new ones lately based on my research. Interestingly enough though with the explosion of the Pokemon Go game, they are allow many Pokemon character domains like: Riolu.com, Bellsprout.com, Rhydon.com, Horsea.com, Cresselia.com, Darkrai.com and Mankey.com to expire. These domains have been registered since 1999… so why let them expire now? I don’t get it. DonkeyKong.org is on the chopping block as well.

Match.com, LLC has acquired the domain name GetBackOutThere.com from HugeDomains via Afternic for about $2,195.

In general, I would say today’s theme is relating to advertising. Companies will use catchy phrases that relate to the message of an advertisement to continue the message. Winning As One, Music You Can Taste, Good News Is Coming, Get Back Out There are all messages to me that will be used in some sort of advertising message.

  1. Would like to add to your point about companies registering new domains in other TLD’s with the .com being for sale or owned already by somebody.

Have you noticed most of these companies’ second best choice is going for the .net domain if available for registration? If you’ve been tracking this trend, endeavor to do a post about it or share your thoughts in the comments here for more discussion.

And if a company do later acquire the EMD .com of the name, is the .net registration then a defensive move? All of the aforementioned should make a domain investor wonder if it’s safe/strategic to own both the .com and .net of their investable names.
